Hi, I'm trying to learn Hrvatski but I'm having trouble teaching myself (language tapes don't seem to sink in after the first little bit). I'm looking for Croatian speakers (native or otherwise) in San Francisco who might be able to help. Also, I just moved here (SF), and I know there's a Croatian Cultural Center, but it's far from me, and I haven't made it down yet.
If there's anyone who
-would like to give me a short weekly lesson (for trade?) or is interested in learning together.
-has ideas about good resources for learning the language
or
-is enthusiastic about Croatia and just wants to hang out...
drop a line!
Hvala.

Re: croatians in sf?
Fri, October 14, 2005 - 6:29 AMDobar dan,
Kako si? Zelim sve naj lepse.
Since I learned Croatia I learned a specific dialect which is from arround Zagreb; kaze se ; Ja govorim po prigorski, zagorski a to je sve kajkavski.
My husband is Croatian we spent some time this summer re-building our house which is a beutifull over 100 year old two story..
Sorry that are not to many "enthusiastic" people here.
Well I dont go many offten to the Croatian Community, as the Croatian Center in SF I am not sure you will find it very usefull as to learn the language most of the people that are connected in this center they are old immigrants.
Some of them dont even speak Croatian any more.
There is a Croatian church in San Jose...
Where are you located in the Bay Area?
I am in the North Bay.

Re: croatians in sf?
Tue, December 27, 2005 - 2:29 PMZdravo... I have to say that most of the Croatians I know would never live in the Lower Haight. But for myself, I'm a huge fan of the Toronado and some of the other local establishments. I've been to the church in San Jose and they aren't the artistic type of folk, for the most part.
I've heard of Kakavski, and I actually met a grad student that is doing her thesis on Kakavkaski! I'm trying to get her to teach me to read hrvatski. She actually described me as the poster child for illiteracy.
At any rate, I know some Bosnians in the city. I haven't hung out with them much, but the common language is alway a plus for all of us. My issue is that I can't understand all of the slang they use. Leaves me at a loss. So I share your pain. -

Sorry, but I don't speak kajkavski... I just know some of the sylable replacements in a very few words. I really need to practice my HR.
I've actually met very few people in SJ that I can really chill with. But they aren't all bad folks... just different.
