Searching for the least spoiled Croatia... need help!

Hello, my girlfrind and I are planning a summer trip to Croatia... We live in Spain and actually want to escape the main-stream tourism (exagerated prices for rich west europeans... that's spain's case)

We are open to your recomendations. We'd like to camp around as much as possible, spend as little as possible and go to hiden and non-(specially)-habilitated-tourist-areas, meet like-minded people, learn about the culture,... all in a period of ONE or TWO months.

We want to visit islands or simply one island (not touristic again) and enjoy our days on the beach... we love to swim naked, feel free to be nude, we are very open and simply don't want the tipical tourist spots... BUT ALL YOU FIND ON THE interNET IS RELATED TO TOURISTIC AREAS, wich is the island(s) or area you'd recomend some youngsters like us?

Any help, recomendation,... is very welcome!!!

Thank you, big kiss

Shai and Maria

Hello! I'm new to this forum and wonder if there are any Croatians in Seattle who might be interested in meeting/possibly some language lessons? I lived in Zagreb for a year (1990) and loved it there. I'm interested in going back to visit...I'm not sure if I'm looking for any kind of formal language training at this point, just someone to hang out with who might be able to teach me a few thigs over coffee! :-) Anyone, anyone?

stepan mesic in SF

Greetings Hrvatski tribers,

So I saw Stepan Mesic at the World Affairs Council last week in San Fran... and it was a VERY ODD presentation.
And i'm still assessing what to make of him. And it might take more research than i have time for to write an informed article
about it all, but thought I might start off with gathering some other impressions about him.

Well just to jump into the heart of the talk:
He gave a pretty impressive and skilled diplomatic account of struggling as a small country in the shadow of a superpower and the EU, and basicly went off on a lengthy and elaborate description of a world in which where there are NO LONGER any "soveriegn states", and was therefore a strong supporter of the UN, whereby "satellite" countries in the globalized world might have some chance of having an equal voice on crucial matters ... and well , it was obvious that he had some adequate cynicism about the UN's current functioning.

It was obvious that he was in the states to lure business to the country, but said it was not by chance that he was addressing SF , where the UN had been founded, and seemed genuinely concerned about protecting the autonomy of his people, rather than coming to make the $ales pitches.

Ok, these are probably too massive topics for this quik summation, but i'll just drop a small bone , and see what opinions are out there.

Croatian Ancenstry

I just found out my Great-Grandfather was from Croatia. I don't know all the details, but apparently he was a stowaway at 10 years old, and jumped ship in Baltimore to join his brother in Pittsburg. He was from Slunj, and apparently left to avoid the draft at the time.

Just thought I'd share.

Croatia's official submission for the 2005 Academy Awards for Best
Foreign-Language Film, LONG DARK NIGHT is an emotional portrait of an
entire country caught in the devastation of WWII, and the consequences
brought onto one small village of Croatians of German ethnic background
during the 1940's – 1950's. Iva (Goran Visnjiæ), a college student
devoted to his family and friends, finds himself forced to fight with
the communist partisans when war erupts and his best friend, Mata, ends
up fighting on the opposite side with the Nazi-allied Ustasha. The path
of these two former friends –
both troubled by their respective choices – mirrors the complex and
difficult transformation of Croatia during that time.

A WONDERFUL NIGHT IN SPLIT/Ta Divna Splitska Noæ
Mon., March 27, 7:45 pm
(Croatia, 2004, 100mins.)
Director/Screenwriter: Arsen-Anton Ostojiæ; Producer: Jozo Patljak

Croatia's official submission for the 2006 Academy Awards for Best
Foreign-Language Film. It's New Year's Eve on the narrow cobblestoned
streets of the ancient port town of Split on Croatia's Adriatic Coast
and everyone's up for a celebration. Stylishly shot in black and white
and constructed around three very human stories, Ostojic's debut feature
follows a smalltime drug dealer involved with a war widow and her son, a
young female junkie in crisis mode and a depressed American sailor, and
a teenage couple. Shot entirely in the hauntingly beautiful Ghetto of
Split, these three love stories unfold, and each character will have
irreversibly changed hir or her life by the stroke of midnight.

WITNESSES/Svjedoci
Thu., March 30, 5:45 pm
(Croatia, 2003, 90mins.)
Director/Screenwriter: Vinko Brešan; Producer: Ivan Maloèa

Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the Medfilm Festival Roma, Peace
and Ecumenical Film Award at the Berlin Film Festival and many other
prices at the festivals around the world. In a small Croatian town
defending itself against the Serb army, this story unfolds from a
number of different view points.
A grieving wife and mother mourns the death of her husband, while her
young son murders a Serbian man in his home. The woman's other son
suffers from a war wound, while his girlfriend conducts an
investigation into the Serbian man's death. Brešan's political drama
explores ethnic hatred and moral ambiguity against the backdrop of war.

because no one posts on this tribe... no one posts...so i am posting. i am fantasizing about playing about in adriatic waters, getting tan and blond and sweet like the croatians, sliding along the smooth stone streets of dubrovnik, a trip to medjugorje, old people who look like my grandma, and coffees and fatty fried fish and chips, and nothing on the radio but cher and christian rock (but that's okay) because i love croatia.

dobar dan, croatia tribe... moderator idea

dobar dan croatia tribe,

just joined this tribe...cause i had amazing croatian experiences last summerand hope to learn more
and return again soon.

and just thought i'd drop a thought on moderator needs ...

i find it a bit odd that the structure of tribe seems to allow for only one moderator per tribe...
correct me if i'm wrong...maybe there are ways to set that up that i haven't realized...

but if true, this is a bit "old school" , one person in control... "top dog" paradigms.
the net is evolving into better collective forms like wikipedia.org, where everyone can partcipate and co-create.
so these type of networks can also move in this direction...

here's a form by which this can be done Now without structural changes by the new owners.
create a Tribe ID, a fictitious person/avatar and then post the password to the tribe allowing all members to
enter.

there might be some drawbacks which i haven't fully thought thru but
would no doubt make for an interesting experiment.
hmmm , maybe such avatars already exist here !!

would be very curious to hear any feedback on it.

ciao,
podp

I was wondering if anyone had any information regarding booking agents or tour managment w/n the aegian pennisula. I am in a large brass percussion ensemble that is considering the Guca Fest this summer and trying to tie in other festivals or events in the region. I am interested in connecting with someone who may be able to provide suggestions or who is actually involved in booking festivals and dealing with artist visas.

I'm interested in some Croatian recipes since our family has lost them (great grandparents from Pag island) except for annually cooking a lamb on a spit and running around in the backyard carrying it on our shoulders. (I can't say those theatrics are necessarily Croatian, but they are fun!)

I will be travelling to Split for about 3-4 days in March. Any suggestions on things I MUST check out (lesser known attractions, restaurants, music, etc.)? I am already fairly familiar with some of the main attractions, such as the palace and museums, but would greatly appreciate any other ideas people have.

Also, would it be worth it to go to anywhere else outside of Split, or is 3 or 4 days in Split alone pushing it?

Thanks in advance for your comments!!

Hi, I'm trying to learn Hrvatski but I'm having trouble teaching myself (language tapes don't seem to sink in after the first little bit). I'm looking for Croatian speakers (native or otherwise) in San Francisco who might be able to help. Also, I just moved here (SF), and I know there's a Croatian Cultural Center, but it's far from me, and I haven't made it down yet.
If there's anyone who
-would like to give me a short weekly lesson (for trade?) or is interested in learning together.
-has ideas about good resources for learning the language
or
-is enthusiastic about Croatia and just wants to hang out...
drop a line!
Hvala.

It is unfortunate when much of the world sees Croats as being represented by the lower-echelons of their society. For expample, even though the Ustashi was a puppet government put in place by an occupying power (Germany), Croats are regulary described as having collaborated with Germany during the war. This is in spite of the fact that the overwhelming majority of Croats backed the Croatian Peasant Party.

This pro-Gotovina rally in Split appears to be another expample of this. What's you take?

Yes, I'm going to Croatia, emphasis on the coastline.
Will be there the first couple weeks of September.

Recommendations on ground transport?

Anyone got any rave reviews on destinations/accomodations you want to send my way?

A couple of my interests, if that helps:

music (live music, traditional music, dj culture, breakbeats, electronica)
snorkeling
hiking
cooking classes
fortune telling

Any information is greatly appreciated!

I'm starting to look in to the "economic feasibility" of another summer in Croatia and planning out a route of places to visit... I found that geocaching is picking up in Croatia too! Should be fun! If I go, I plan on stashing some crap for people to find and looking for crap others stashed :) Hopefully I won't find any landmines :( It freaks me out to see those UN mine field warnings in some of the out of the way towns. Scary stuff!!

Let's kick this up! Post your thoughts and ideas for Croatia 2005!!

Rakia in New York?

My two weeks in Croatia was great. I brought back three bottles of wine (from Blato), not great. But I also bought a bottle of homemade rakia and olive oil at the outdoor market in Korcula. The olive oil was some of the best I've ever had. The guy selling me the rakia (in a glass bottle with all the herbs) assured me that if I had a shot every morning, I would never get sick.

I finished the bottle long ago. I've been trying to find authentic rakia ever since. I live in Manhattan. I should be able to find anything. Any suggestions? Where are the Croatian communities?

My Night In Korcula

I was in Croatia at the end of 1998. The war had been over for a few years (Dubrovnik was mostly restored), but the fighting lasted longer in Bosnia and Kosovo. The country was still pretty empty of tourists from the West.

I met a great British couple on the ferry to Korcula. After roaming around the city and a short nap, we met to grab dinner. We wandered the empty streets of the old walled in city and found ourselves in the Cathedral square. Quite small, magnificently old-style, and quiet. One of the restaurants had a few tables outside under some eaves. There was another young couple holding hands and driking wine. We thought this was right for the three of us.

We ordered wine. wine and wine. The waiter kept running out and filling up our glasses and replenishing the bread and bowls of olives. (I learned to eat olives in Crotia. Hated them till I got there. But every restaurant put out a bowl of olives, and when I didn't eat them, I got very curious looks. Now I pop them like, well, like olives.) We couldn't figure out the menu, so we told the fella to just bring us food. Without getting into detail, it was some of the freshest most wonderful seafood I've ever had.

Half way through our meal, the restaurant brought out two long tables and set them up, end to end, in front of the door to the Cathedral. (which was close, of course.) Then, about 15 men, mostly in their 20s, a few in their teens and approaching 50ish, sat down. They ordered a banquet of food that should have been in a movie. We exchanged toasts from across the square. They sent over some stuff for us to taste. We responded in kind.

It ends up that they were Germans and Austrians, sailing around the Mediterranean. As the dinner wound down, one older guy, wonderfully rotund with a fat, red face ringed by snow white hair and a bushy beard, sent the youngest guy running off. The kid returned with a huge accordian. And the music started.

They began with the two older gentleman singing sad somber tales, which they later explained to us were about loves lost at sea. But soon the tempo picked up. As did the wine. And then a waiter came out with his violin. At by 11 p.m., twenty-five people were dancing and laughing in this little, centuries old square, under the brightest Adriatic sky, in front of that beautiful Cathedral.

What a wonderful night.

I could add several of my own pics, mostly from Dubrovnik & Split (a mover lost most of my other pics WHAAAAAA) if anyone is interested. I also posted some many in the balkantravel.tribe.net tribe. I have one almost exactly like the Dubronik pic already posted, too.

I'm glad to see this tribe is growing! If anyone is interested and in the NYC metro area, we should plan a meet & greet type of event. Let's grow this Croatian American community! It creates opportunities for all!

New Group - Travel in the Balkans

Pozdrav svima,

I created a new tribe called Travel in the Balkans: balkantravel.tribe.net for people interested in travel in the Balkans, for people who have traveled in the Balkans and want to talk about their experiences or give advice to people who would like to travel in the Balkans. Also, I think it would be nice for people who live in the region to join and give an insider's point of view to visitors. Please feel free to add pics as well. Hope to see you there.
